The Best Canon Digital SLR Camera

By Chris Campbell

Whatever you do, don't ask a Nikon / Sony / Pentax SLR owner, "What the best Canon Digital SLR camera I should buy?". Camera enthusiasts tend to be incredibly brand loyal, and will argue endlessly over why their particular brand is the best of all time . . . and will always be . . . forever and forever amen! Someone who owns several brand name cameras, and therefore owes his / her allegiance to no one brand would probably be a better person to ask.

For first time SLR owners, Canon makes one of the best selling and most critically reviewed entry level SLR cameras ever. I would of course be referring to the Canon Digital Rebel XTi digital SLR camera (~$650). Its predecessor being the Canon Digital Rebel XT (still available ~$450), and it's successor (recently announced but not yet available), the Canon Digital Rebel XSi (~$800?). If you've never owned a SLR camera before, and are a little nervous about taking the plunge, you really can't go wrong with any model from the Canon Rebel lineup. Your final choice of these three cameras will really come down to a compromise between price and newer technology. They're all capable of taking great pictures, and every experienced photographer will tell you, the most important feature in any camera, is the ability of the person with his finger on the shutter button.

For anyone with a somewhat larger budget, the Canon EOS 30D, or the Canon EOS 40D both make excellent choices. Better kit lenses, less image noise, and a nicer LCD are just of the few features you'll find. More controls are nice however, as the potential for artistic expression is greatly increased. Full frame, means that you have an image sensor (CCD), that corresponds with the old 35mm film SLR cameras. To some, full frame is the holy grail of digital photography. Initially this technology was only available for 2 or 3 times the $2000 current price of the 5D.

Any one of the previously mention cameras could be the best Canon digital SLR camera . . . FOR YOU. Those last two words are really the significant part. If you don't know how to take good pictures, then save your money, and pick up a simple point and shoot for a couple hundred bucks. If however, your willing to work on your photography skills, and become a better artist go the SLR route.

Understanding Digital Camera Zoom Lenses

By Michael Huddleston

There are two types of digital camera zoom : optical and digital.

Optical Zoom

An optical zoom changes magnification by moving glass in the lens, changing the image falling on the sensor. Using an optical zoom maintains picture quality.

Zoom Ranges and 35mm Equivalents

Optical zoom lenses usually have a specification called “equivalent in 35mm.” This tells you the zoom range of the digital camera compared to a 35mm film camera. Typical 35mm equivalent zoom ranges you will see listed are 35mm-70mm or 35mm-105mm.

For example:

Wide-angle means a lens takes in more than normal viewing perspective. Telephoto lenses magnify the subject, bring it closer. Using these numbers as a guide, you can get an idea of the range of zoom lenses and what they will do for you.

28mm…..wide angle

35mm……slight wide angle

50mm…..normal perspective

70mm…..slight telephoto

105mm…..moderate telephoto

135mm…..strong telephoto

200mm+…..extreme telephoto So, a 35mm-105mm equivalent zoom lens changes from a slight wide angle to a moderate telephoto. A 28mm-200mm equivalent lens changes from a wide angle to an extreme telephoto.

A 35mm-105mm equivalent zoom is adequate for most users. If you plan on doing landscapes or picture taking in small, confined areas, consider a camera that can zoom to a 28mm equivalent.

Optical Zoom as 2x, 3x, 5x…

Taking the 35mm-105mm example above, we divide 105 by 35 to get a 3x zoom. A 28mm-105mm would be approximately a 4x zoom, and a 35mm-350mm would be a 10x zoom.

Digital Zoom

A digital zoom does not change, magnification. It simply crops the image on the sensor to magnify the image. Because less sensor is used, you use fewer pixels. This decreases picture quality. When comparing cameras, always use the optical number as this is much more important. You can get the same effect as a digital zoom by using software to crop the photos.

Note About Digital Zoom

As digital cameras become more sophisticated and powerful they are becoming capable of delivering “optical tricks” that render pictures that are remarkably stable and good looking. Only recently, cameras “digital zooms” are getting much better. Like all things though some companies are better than others. Do your research.

Canon Digital Cameras. Quality, Reliability, and Affordable

By Andy Maingam

Canon Digital Cameras. Even the name sounds right for the job. Many happy snappers fell in love with Canon cameras long before the digital revolution. In fact, my first ever Canon camera was an AE1-Program SLR (Single Lens Reflex). I think it was launched around 1981. The AE-1 Program was then, and still is, in my opinion, a fantastic camera. Well done Canon digital cameras. In a world of increasing competition, and technical evolution, it’s just great to see Canon has secured its place at the top in this new era of digital photography.

Put any Canon digital camera in your mitts and it will fit like a glove. These are high quality, and often superior cameras which are very user friendly. Additionally, the Canon digital camera also has many features that are recognized by the professionals and are just perfect for those that want to be a little more adventurous with their picture taking. Alternatively, you can just leave them on auto setting and click away with confidence knowing their lenses will capture high quality images that you can be proud of.

So just what makes Canon cameras so special? Well, you will be hard pressed to find such quality for such value. When it comes to value for money, Canon cameras really do take some beating, but don’t just take my word for it, hop online and read some customer reviews and you will soon see that the canon line of digital cameras have a great overall reputation.

The point and shoot capability with Canon digital cameras is one thing but they also have crystal clear LCD screens, and a range of lenses to chose from which all contribute to their ease of use. In just one of these light tight boxes, you have the versatility to be professional, the simplicity to be a happy snapper, and a price tag which allows you to choose from the best for less. The Canon digital camera has really been engineered with everyone in mind.

As a keen armature I have had Canon digital cameras for donkey’s years. In fact, I must have had 11 different models now both compact and SLRs, and I can honestly say with hand on heart that I have never ever been disappointed. There are plenty of reasons why anyone should consider purchasing from the new range of Canon digital cameras, but if you’re someone who would like a high quality, well designed digital camera at an affordable price, then it’s very probable there’s a Canon waiting for just for you.
